There’s bracketology. Then, there’s hairology.

The NCAA has too many rules. Head coaches micromanage. It’s one of the last avenues of creativity for players.

Hair.

March Madness officially kicks off in Dayton on March 14th. However, for smaller, one-bid conferences, the madness is already here. Such is the case for the Northeast Conference’s Mt. Saint Mary’s. Known as the Mount, this small liberal arts school in rural Maryland won their regular season title. However, like many mid-major regular season champions, they’ll be sashaying into the NIT if they don’t win their conference tournament.

On Saturday afternoon, they took care of business in their conference semis, scrapping past a game Robert Morris, 75-66. (The game’s outcome wasn’t decided until the final minute.) Sophomore Elijah Long, who looks a lot like Prince, was the man for the Mount. The late singer, a hardcore hoops fans, would approve of Long’s game. Against RM, Long, who is a lanky, Pitino-approved 6 foot even, scored 22, had five boards and five assists.

After a big shot, Long dances a little. Long likes to dance.

And Prince would approve of Long’s hair. Long has a longish, somewhat wild mohawk that has a bit of a tail. And he has a stache, a goatee and conspicuous sideburns that don’t quit. Long has the best sideburns in college basketball, unofficially.

At last look, Lunardi has the Mount headed to Dayton for the play-in game. In hairology, thanks to Long, they’re a very high seed, perhaps even a one.

Long and the Mount play St. Francis in the NEC championship this Tuesday at 7pm on ESPN.
